One of my most memorable days was the one I first met Charlie Mock.It was at Long's Drugs #67 (remember that chain?) Charlie was being promoted as my new Assistant Mgr. and Dennis Burnett was driving him up from Gilroy, personally, to introduce us. Perched up in my office, looking out over the sales floor, anxiously awaiting their arrival, I saw Dennis walk in with another man...a rather large man...walking with a confidence and a swagger like I had rarely seen...As I rose out of my chair to greet them, there stood one of the most imposing men I had ever met...I found myself face to face with Charlie Mock. I'd like to speak of two relationships Charlie and I shared...One professional and one personal...It was evident early on that our passion and our drive complimented each other...Our vast experiences provided a great foundation for our business success. We were leaders! Leaders develop behaviors like "winners!" Leaders try to make something of themselves...Leaders are always trying their hardest to get to the top...and the more people you take with you, the quicker you'll get there...and the longer you'll stay...Together, Charlie and I grew Long's Redwood City into a $15 million drug store...no other store on the mainland ever achieved that in yearly sales...no other drug store ever will...We were 2nd only to Ala Moana in Hawaii...Charlie knew that "to be a great manager, you had to keep those who hate you away from those that are still undecided!" Leadership breeds success...With success, we live in Victory...Charlie could never seem to give enough...enough of his time...enough of his love...enough of his understanding...it all registered so deeply in those of us around him...These awesome qualities came as a result of some of his pain, some of his difficulties, and some of his hardships...from that he learned perseverance, strength, and patience... Patience is the ability to wait...being grateful for the things you have, not what you don't...Being thankful for all the things that are good, not asking for what can make things better! Patience leads to maturity...it lessens our anger and anxiety...we begin to recognize our difficulties as our opportunities...it leads to stronger more loving, longer-lasting relationships. People knew Charlie Mock by what they saw...I saw Charlie Mock mature into the man I knew he could become! Charlie saw every setback as a set-up for a comeback! It didn't matter to Charlie where he began...what was important was where he finished the race...he knew it was possible to fail in many, many ways... but to succeed...Only One! Charlie Mock was the most ferocious competitor I ever worked with...Charlie ferociously guarded his private life as well as his past...he always left you wanting to know more...and most of all, Charlie, so ferociously, loved his family and friends...Charlie Mock was one of the most Ferocious Men I ever met! What we sow in tears for Charlie, we will reap in Joy! Unlike a professional boxer knocked out on the canvas, God's mercy hasn't counted Charlie out...it's counted him in!!! Charlie wants us all to Live in Victory...Develop the ability to receive what's been given us to succeed...Develop behaviors like a Winner. Be a Victor, not a Victim! I'll forever hold you in my heart my dear, dear friend!

We were so sorry to hear that Charlie has passed away--it just doesn't seem possible. Those early years at Alisal Longs were made tolerable by Charlie's humor, warmth, and fun-loving spirit. Their was never a dull moment when Charlie was in charge. He was a special man who left an imprint on the hearts of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Charlie Mock was a great human being …when he wanted to be, but he always left the impression that he also had a touch of a rebel in him as well. I first met him when Dan Stratton introduced him as his new Assistant Mgr. at Longs in Redwood City. I noticed that his hair was hanging a bit over his collar in back (Rebel!) Soon, he was promoted to be a Store Manager at Westborough in So. San Francisco, and later King & Tully in San Jose. Then, it was on to Gilroy, Prunedale, Salinas, Monterey and finally Red Bluff. Charlie had a kind heart, and always tried to do the right thing. He certainly will be missed by his Friends in the extended “Longs Family” and by his own family, as well. It really is sad that he left this world at a young age, for he still had much to look forward to as a Grandfather.
